Michael Vick all but concedes that Geno Smith is Jets’ starting quarterback

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – Michael Vick says his summer showdown with Geno Smith to be the New York Jets’ starting quarterback is “not an open competition,” suggesting it’s clearly Smith’s job right now.

Vick says Thursday during the team’s first open media session this offseason that his situation in Philadelphia last year with Nick Foles was different. Eagles coach Chip Kelly declared it an open competition in which the “best guy was going to win the job.” The veteran says the Jets have not made a similar statement.

Vick has labeled Smith the starter all offseason, and says he just has to prepare so he’s “ready when my number’s called.” He acknowledges this situation can be tough because “deep down, you always want to be the starter.”
